SHELLEY WOODS (6)
OPP POM - SHELLEY WOODS
EASTERN REGIONS DIVISION 1 NORTH CHAMPIONS 2008/2009

West Lynn ladies finished the season off in style with Shelley Woods claiming a double hat-trick. With the title already in the bag the main focus of the day was whether Shelley could get the 6 goals she needed to bring her tally up to 50 goals for the season and also it would mean she finished leading goal scorer out of all 3 Eastern Region leagues.

The match started off quite slow with West Lynn looking like it was a case of lets just get the game over as we have already won the league but after a few moans from the side lines the girls picked up the pace and started to play some good flowing football.
Lynn started to get on top of the match but lacked a final ball on a lot of occasions to create anything clear cut. It was very much a midfield battle which Kerrie Stevens and Emma Woods where coping well with in the middle of park and with Kirsty Scott and Sarah Rogers giving good width you felt it was just a matter of time before Lynn put one good move together that would lead to the opening goal.

The first goal came mid way through the first half when a strong challenge in the middle of the park by Emma Woods meant Lynn won the ball back. The ball was then slide through for Shelley Woods to run onto where from 20 yards out she hit a low shot across the keeper to find the back of net and set her on her way to breaking a personal record.
The second soon followed when Kerrie Stevens this time put her through with a defence splitting pass. Shelley raced into the area with the ball, all the time having her shirt pulled but she stayed strong and got her shot away which the keeper saved, the rebound fell out to the side and Shelley sprung back up to fire the ball home.
West Lynn now went into half time with a comfortable 2-0 lead and now all the team where focused on helping Shelley achieve her target.

Lynn flew out of the blocks in the second half and before Huntingdon could react with Shelley scoring goals number 3 and 4 in a lightening 10 minute spell.

The goals came from two good Lynn moves in which Shelley was going to make no mistake. The first came from a good move down the right involving Heather Bedford and Sarah Rogers where a neat one two lead to Rogers crossing for Shelley to finish in trade mark style. The second was a long ball over the top of the Huntingdon defence. Shelley's speed got her onto the ball first and she finished across the keeper. Now she knew it was a real possibility to get to 50 goals as she still had 35 minutes to get the two remaining goals she required.
The match settled into the Huntingdon half for the majority of the second period with West Lynn looking really dangerous when theY moved the ball out into the wider areas.
Leanne Sheen whipped in a few good corners and almost scored directly with one when a high in swinger beat the keeper but to her relief it came back out off the bar and out to safety.
Shelley claimed her fifth of the match when a ball was sent over the Huntingdon back line from Heather Bedford to change the play from right to left. Shelley once again showed her strength and determination to hold off the challenge of the Huntingdon centre half to fire a left footed half volley across the keeper and into the far corner of the net for another well taken goal.
Moments later Shelley and everyone else thought she had done it when she fired in another shot from just inside the area which looked to have gone in but the celebrations where short lived as it had gone narrowly wide and hit the side netting.
But this was Shelley's day and the team put one final good move together to give Shelley another opportunely. From just inside the right hand side of the area Shelley picked her spot and made sure that the ball this time hit the net and all her team came rushing over to congratulate her on a incredible achievement. Shelley on achieving this great feat turned to her manager and gave him the one finger salute as he had early in the day said it could not be done but once again Shelley has proven anything is possible.

.
The day was for Shelley but it was another showing of what a great team and season it has been to end it on such a high note as this.
Well done to you all for what has been a very memorable season. You have all deserved the success you have had and i'm very proud to have been involved with such a terrific bunch of girls.
May the years ahead bring you even more success.
WELL DONE CHAMPIONS!!!!!
