Lynn lift Norfolk League Trophy - 14 May 2003
KING'S Lynn won the Norfolk Ladies' League Cup final with a 3-1 victory over Mulbarton.
As in the league encounter the previous week both teams contributed to an entertaining well balanced game. Within a minute Lynn were ahead. A through ball found Leanne Sheen who muscled her way between two defenders and pushed the ball past the advancing keeper.
Mulbarton, never more dangerous than when behind, attacked incessantly and deservedly equalised when one of their forwards received the ball on her left turned and rifled a shot from 20 yards which keeper Jeanine Barnett could only pick out of the net.
After that Lynn's Faye Short used her speed to create many chances but lack of composure in front of goal cost her a hat-trick. As much as Mulbarton tried, their attacks broke down in the last third of the pitch as the Lynn defence of Lisa Wilson, Sonya Smith, Karen Wilson and Michelle Stewart worked hard to protect their goal.
In the second half Mulbarton moved up a gear and began to create chances but keeper Jeanine Barnett was having the game of her life, making two great saves and racing from her line to gather or clear whenever danger threatened.
After 10 minutes Laura Clarke replaced Ruth Dack and Emma Woods replaced the injured Sonya Smith. Lynn's midfield of Kerrie Stevens, Shelley Woods and Amy Marsh were having to play too deep to be an effective attacking force.
However, on 70 minutes Lynn regained the lead, a goalmouth scramble ending with Faye Short firing home. Amanda Chambers then replaced Leanne Sheen to help hold the lead, but Shelley Woods had a better idea.
Gaining possession near the halfway line she raced down the left, jinked past three defenders and lifted the ball over the keeper from the edge of the area. Mulbarton never gave up the chase but Lynn held on to make sure the cup came back to West Norfolk.
Five minutes later the Belles restored their lead and Lynn's Janine Barnett made a terrific fingertip save to deny them a third. Half-time: 1-2.
Lynn came out for the second half and played their best football with the Belles' keeper making a point-blank save from the powerful Leanne Sheen.
Shortly after Sheen powered between two defenders to score. Back came the Belles to score.
A left wing corner from Amy Marsh was headed in by Marlene Coetzee.
Faye Short, Coetzee and Shelley Woods covered every inch of the pitch, Michelle Stewart, Lisa Wilson, Sonya Smith and Ali Clarke battled at the back but could do nothing as the Belles scored a fourth, then two more.
Ruth Dack, Nat Pepper, Karen Wilson and Heather Bedford also played a part. Good experience for Lynn who were invited back to Doncaster for a return match.
FOOTBALL: Ladies Win Norfolk Title : 27 May 2005
Lynn Ladies secured the Norfolk league title at the weekend in their 14th year as a club.
The side, who finished as runners-up in the two previous seasons, sealed their Norfolk League triumph with a 9-0 thrashing of Kirkley.
To highlight the bright future for the women's game in West Norfolk.
Lynn Ladies manager Gary Stewart, in his first season in charge, said: "It's very pleasing. It was a very close-run thing, but our commitment pulled us through in the end.
"I thought we'd be in the top three or four at the end of the season, but to win it has exceeded all my expectations.
"When you are playing teams like Norwich, who have a lot bigger catchment area than ourselves, it really shows how well the team has done.
"I'd like to thank all the girls for their hard work and commitment to the club, they fully deserve this title. I'd also like to thank George Dack for all of his hard work."
Lynn clinched the league by a solitary point and with a better goal difference of 30.
Their biggest win came in a runaway 17-1 rout against Stalham and topping the scoring charts for the season was midfielder Shelley Woods, who netted 36 league goals.
Against Kirkley, Lynn understandably started nervously with the title within their grasp.
Amy Marsh struck the woodwork before they finally broke the deadlock five minutes before the interval when Ruth Dack netted following a quickly-taken free kick.
It was one-way traffic after the break, Nicola Bray bagging a hat-trick, Woods adding a brace, while Marsh, Leanne Sheen and Sonya Smith helped themselves to one goal each.
Next season, the team will be promoted to the Eastern Region League. They will also contest the County Cup.
After operating with a small squad during the campaign, manager Stewart said: "We should have three or four new players for next season so all being well we will be even stronger."
